Nolan Rogalski

Welcome to my portfolio! I'm Nolan, a 20-year-old junior pursuing a journalism major and minors in Spanish and Law & Society at the University of Maryland, College Park. I currently serve as managing editor at Testudo Times, and have reported extensively for Capital News Service, whether that be as a political reporter in Annapolis or as a sports reporter in London. For the summer of 2026, I am interning with the Providence Journal in my home state of Rhode Island as a local news reporter. Here, I've compiled some of my favorite clips through my first four semesters at Maryland. ‘These are stories that need to be told’: Efforts to preserve Maryland’s Black history continue
Reporting on state politics in Annapolis for a University of Maryland capstone class this past spring was my first experience with non-sports reporting. I took on a civil rights beat, and I recognized a pattern of active conservation efforts while building relationships with important stakeholders and wrote this to help establish myself early on.

In Baltimore City, Attar runs for re-election despite federal indictment
I volunteered to help with a project run by the Local News Network covering Maryland General Assembly candidates with criminal records. I received a spreadsheet of candidates with prior transgressions and obtained court records by driving around the state to navigate local courts and using PACER. After printing and analyzing more than 2,000 pages of documents and making several requests for comment, I wrote stories on five candidates, including one state senator who currently faces eight felony charges.

Maryland football defensive lineman arrested, charged with DUI
I was tasked with reporting the breaking news that one of Maryland's defensive lineman was charged with a DUI. I pored through multiple court records, corroborated information between sources and obtained a media statement, turning around a story in under 40 minutes.

Se sugirió al consejo de College Park revisar el código vigente sobre eliminación de residuos en apartamentos
I attended a board meeting of the College Park Committee for a Better Environment and investigated the lack of recycling in local apartment complexes. I then translated the story for publication in La Voz Latina, the university's Spanish student newspaper, in an effort to further my language skills and improve my brevity.

‘It’s a hate fest’: Inside Maryland fans’ trip to boo Kevin Willard
Head coach Kevin Willard's acrimonious departure from Maryland men's basketball following the 2025-26 season earned him alarge number of haters in College Park. Before his first return to the DMV with his new team Villanova, there were rumblings that Maryland fans would be at the game to voice their dissent. I took a chance and got credentialed for the game, where I found several Terps fans happy to speak their mind. After the game, I asked Willard about the Maryland fans, prompting a response that went viral on social media and drew coverage from ESPN, CBS Sports and more.

Maryland football outclassed in 55-10 defeat to No. 2 Indiana
Being an editor at Testudo Times also comes with the responsibility of being a beat writer for football and men's basketball. While editing multiple articles a day this past fall, I juggled coverage of the revenue sports, producing game stories such as this one.

From Spanish hero to Maryland men’s basketball understudy, Guillermo Del Pino’s new journey begins
I was able to put my Spanish knowledge to use, getting an exclusive story with Maryland men's basketball's Spanish guard Guillermo Del Pino. I reported on his journey to College Park and analyzed his initial display, putting together a profile in both English and Spanish.

Logan McNaney continues the legacy of No. 1 for Maryland men's lacrosse
Maryland men's lacrosse's No. 1 jersey is a storied part of the team's culture, given to the team's best player. Logan McNaney earned the honor of wearing it for Maryland, but that was far from a guarantee -- even just weeks before the season. I explored the winding paths both the number and the player took before coming together ahead of the 2025 season.
In Studio

Previewing "The Rivalry" live
While reporting on men's lacrosse, I was asked to come onto the student-produced Maryland sports show "The Left Bench" as a guest expert. In my studio debut, I spoke about Logan McNaney and the Terps' strong start to the season in preparation for Maryland's matchup with hated foe Johns Hopkins, nicknamed "The Rivalry."

Maryland men's lacrosse season in review
I returned to "The Left Bench" alongside the other student beat reporter for Maryland men's lacrosse to preview the Terps' tournament chances. I highlighted some opponents and keys to success along the tournament path and talked about players that had impressed for Maryland.
On Air

Podcasting for Testudo Talk
I am responsible for helping to produce the Testudo Talk podcast. During football season, it would come out roughly twice weekly. The rest of the year, it's once every week or two. We average around 300 listeners. I've linked a sample of my work there, which is available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Sideline reporting on WMUC Sports Radio
WMUC Sports Radio wanted me to come on air for Maryland men's basketball's senior day as a sideline reporter as they experimented with having a third person on the broadcast. In my first time on the radio, I contributed insight and delivered semi-planned packages on all of Maryland's seniors, passing headphones back and forth on commercial breaks to deliver information on various Terps in their last home game.
